Simple Changes Spa in Saginaw Sparks Simple Changes for Seniors

Samantha Johnson, Holistic Wellness Advocate and proprietor of Simple Changes Spa located in Traditions of Saginaw’s West Campus, didn’t set out specifically to work with seniors—it was an opportunity that found her, and she is so grateful it did.

Right Place, Right Time

“I was working in a salon at the time, but it didn’t feel the right fit for me,” Samantha said.   “I’m not really a ‘hair and nails’ person, and I wasn’t getting the clients I needed.” She remembered how much she enjoyed working with a client in Texas who lived in a retirement community, so she started looking into offering in-home massage services at retirement communities.

The first place she called was Traditions of Saginaw, which had a dedicated massage room. “When I came to check it out, I was blown away by how beautiful the space was and how welcoming the facility felt,” Samantha said. Everything just fell into place from there. What started as a practical decision turned into something so much more meaningful. “I’ve grown to love working with seniors and being part of their wellness journey,” she said. “It’s been a privilege to offer care and connection to this community, and I’ve learned so much from the experience.”

Benefits of Massage for Seniors

Massage offers so many benefits for seniors, both physically and emotionally. Physically, it can help with chronic aches and pains, improve circulation, and even lower blood pressure. Many seniors deal with conditions like arthritis, sciatica, or general stiffness, and massage can provide relief and help them feel more comfortable in their daily lives. It’s also a great companion to physical therapy for those recovering from surgery or an injury. Massage can reduce swelling, improve range of motion, and speed up healing by increasing blood flow to the affected areas. “I’ve worked with clients recovering from hip replacements or knee surgeries, and they’ve found that massage helped them feel more supported and comfortable during their recovery,” Samantha said.

Beyond the physical benefits, massage is incredibly helpful for stress and anxiety. Moving into a retirement community can be a big adjustment, with some new residents struggling with anxiety or feeling overwhelmed by the transition. Massage can provide a chance to relax, feel grounded, and reconnect with themselves. “It’s amazing to see how much it can help someone feel more at ease and even embrace their new environment,” Samantha said.

For many seniors, touch is something they don’t experience as often as they used to, and massage can be a powerful way to help them feel cared for and valued. “I’ve had clients tell me they feel lighter, more relaxed, and even more optimistic after a session,” Samantha said.

Massage supports the whole person, whether it’s easing physical pain, reducing stress, or providing emotional comfort.

Other Ways Seniors Can Self-Care

While massage offers incredible benefits, there are also simple ways seniors can take care of themselves between sessions to maintain those benefits and improve their overall well-being. Staying active and mobile is one of the most important things they can do. “I like to remind my clients, ‘If you don’t use it, you lose it,’ Samantha said. While that is a playful way to say it, it’s absolutely true. Gentle movement, like going for regular walks, stretching, or even chair yoga, can help keep the body flexible and strong.

Hydration is another key part of self-care. Many people don’t realize how much dehydration can contribute to muscle stiffness, fatigue, and joint pain. Drinking plenty of water, especially after a massage, helps flush out toxins and keeps the body functioning at its best.

Mindfulness exercises and deep breathing can also help reduce stress. Stress can take a toll on the body, and even a few minutes of focused breathing can help calm the mind and relax tense muscles. For those who enjoy journaling or meditation, these practices can also be a great way to reduce stress and stay connected to their emotional well-being.

Finally, it’s important for seniors to listen to their bodies. If something feels off—whether it’s a new ache, stiffness, or fatigue—it’s important to address it early. Self-care is about being proactive and taking small, consistent steps to feel your best. Massage is a wonderful tool for wellness but combining it with these daily habits can make a huge difference in maintaining health and vitality.
